Badlands National Park is close enough from Rapid City to be a real day trip, but far enough that the day has to be protected: early light, Wall logistics, heat, overlook time, and the drive back all count.
Leave early enough that the first big overlook still has angled light and the car is not already hot.

Badlands is exposed country. Current alerts, road work, storm risk, heat, and sunset timing should decide whether the day starts early, stays simple, or waits for another trip.
Walk the best two or three overlooks slowly enough for boardwalk views, photos, and a quiet minute above the ridges.
After a long exposed day, dinner should be easy and known. Rapid City is useful because the return does not have to become another search.
Badlands plus Wall can fill the day. Add more only if the group truly wants a long prairie loop.
