Pinnacles, Yellow Mounds, short trails, and a west-to-east scenic loop
From Rapid City, enter Badlands National Park near Wall for Pinnacles and Yellow Mounds, then follow the scenic loop east to Ben Reifel Visitor Center and the Door and Window trailheads.
Take I-90 east toward Wall. The Pinnacles entrance is roughly an hour from Rapid City before fuel, breakfast, or traffic stops.
Enter near Wall for broad prairie views at Pinnacles Overlook, then stop where the yellow, red, and gray layers appear around Yellow Mounds.
Continue east to the visitor center, Fossil Exhibit Trail, and the Door and Window trailheads. Notch Trail adds ladders and exposed terrain for prepared hikers.
Leave through the northeast entrance and return west on I-90, or continue east when Badlands is part of the drive home rather than a round trip.
Tradeoff
Pinnacles begins with the widest western view. Yellow Mounds adds bands of mustard, rust, and gray. Fossil Exhibit Trail provides an accessible boardwalk, while Door and Window open into the sharpest formations near the northeast entrance. This order avoids backtracking and keeps Wall outside the park portion of the day.

Badlands is exposed country. Current alerts, road work, storm risk, heat, and sunset timing should decide whether the day starts early, stays simple, or waits for another trip.
Pinnacles overlooks the western wilderness and prairie; Yellow Mounds reveals older soil layers in colors unlike the pale ridges farther east.
Door and Window are short boardwalk-and-trail stops. Notch is longer and includes a log ladder and exposed ledges; skip it in storms, ice, or intense heat.
Use Wall for fuel, food, or a brief roadside break. Spend the larger block of time on overlooks, boardwalks, and the visitor-center side of the loop.
