Rapid City Regional Airport sits southeast of town, roughly 15–20 minutes from downtown by car. Rental-car pickup is the practical choice for park drives.
I-90 reaches Wall and the Badlands to the east and Sturgis or Spearfish to the west; downtown Rapid City sits a few minutes south of the interstate.
US-16 leaves the south side of Rapid City for Reptile Gardens, Bear Country USA, Keystone, and Mount Rushmore, usually 35–45 minutes away.
The Pinnacles entrance near Wall is about an hour east. It fits an eastbound arrival or departure; the full scenic loop takes several additional hours.
Arrival rule
RAP arrivals reach downtown most directly from the southeast. An I-90 hotel is convenient for late flights and east–west road trips; downtown adds walkable restaurants; south-side lodging puts US-16 close for a Mount Rushmore departure. Travelers arriving from Wall should complete the Badlands loop before hotel check-in only when several daylight hours remain.
